Chike Madueke's address on the floor of ITU forum earlier today. Agbalanze is the National President,Inyi Town Union (ITU):

Below is his account of the story:

"Yesterday I visited the Arinze family at Umuchime Enugwu Inyi to commiserate with them on the sad event of Tuesday and the sudden death of their son, Sunday.

The young man was living in Benin City and the father who lives in Makurdi had invited him home so that both of them could sort out a family problem.
They had both gone to the bank together and that was the last outing. Sad!!!

According the father, late Sunday was on the ATM queue, money had finished and the queue dispersed. When money was restocked in the machine, the people tried to reconstitute the line and a lady and the late Sunday disputed their respective positions and that was when the scuffle started.

One of the policemen guarding the bank had sided the lady in question, took Sunday away into their premises, broke a piece of 2x4 wooden plank and hit Sunday behind his head. Sunday collapsed.

The officer had taken Sunday to Genesis with a few other people where he was pronounced dead.
It was an Nkwo day the crowd at the ATM was huge and upon hearing the shock news the crowd erupted in fury and justifiably so.

The DPO had called me about 1.30pm to relay the news and the commotion that had ensued. I was somewhere in the middle of no where around Ebonyi and Obubra in Cross river states when I got the call.

I will like to commend Hon. Sopulibe. PG Anayo Onwumechili, senator Nnebe, High Chief Onyekwena, Hon Emenike, Leader Tabansi, Chairman security Alum, Chinedu, Igwe HRH Okpara and a handful of other patriotic citizens who responded to my call, moved to location and put their lives on the line to calm and assuage the provoked and angry youths.

I wish to thank Admiral Alison Madueke for supporting with very important phone calls and the Igwe of Obibi HRH. Mike Mberedeogu who harkened to my call to speak to key Enugwu Inyi people to diffuse the anger. It worked. I commend the Enugwu Inyi youth leaders Chukwudi Igboala n’Ozegu, Chief Morah, Danga. True sons of Inyi.

I wish therefore to commend our youths for showing so much maturity and restraint in the face of grieve provocation and loss of our own son. It could have been worse  without this show of maturity and respect for authority and our elders.

We wish to commend the DPO of Inyi Police Division, the Unit Commander of the mobile police DSP, Sunday Eremi, the Police Area commander, the Army commander Aliyu and men of the armed forces who showed up promptly to put under control what would have been a bigger disaster.

Going forward, we are convening a meeting of the youths and leaders in Inyi, the police and First Bank firstly to ensure that justice is done to its fullest.

Secondly to assuage our youths and put together short and long term solutions and measures to prevent any such future occurrences and put in place vital control handles as the case may be.
I thank ndû Inyi nine worldwide who called in to show solidarity and support by way of their kind words of encouragement and genuine concerns.

We pray the almighty God to comfort the Arinze family,  the youths and all citizens of Inyi at this time.

May the soul of our son Sunday Rest In Peace and in the bosom of the Lord.
I thank you all."
